There has been a lot of talk amongst the fishing fraternity over many many years about the RDR and the fact that it is not working properly. It is talked about at our committee meetings and AGM's and along the river so at the May committee meeting of the SC Salmon Anglers it was moved that we send a letter to Central South Island Fish & Game pointing out our concerns. The letter that was sent is below for you all to read along with a report about the meeting that Phil de Joux (as Chairman of the SC Salmon Anglers Assn), committee members and fishing anglers attended. This meeting was the Fish & Game meeting in which there was a representative from the RDR present. Report of meeting with Fish & Game
A good turn out of committee members and anglers at the "Public Issues" forum of Fish & Game's meeting the other night, ensured that both Fish & Game councillors and RDR Management were made well aware about the depth of feeling over the loss of salmon smolt out through the Rangitata Diversion Race intake. The point was made that nothing positive has been achieved in preventing the loss of smolt since the Conversation Order on the Rangitata river eleven years ago. The meeting concluded with RDR Management agreeing that they need to do better and include river users more in the process. Fish and Game also agreed that progress could have been better. We all need to keep the pressure up on both of these bodies and take every opportunity to force them to produce results that salmon anglers are happy with. The committee will be watching closely and will keep anglers informed. Watch this space ! Our yearly fishing competition is here again for a two week period starting midnight Friday 26th February and finishing midnight Sunday March 13th March
All fishing needs to be done on either the Orari, Opihi or Rangitata rivers and you can now weigh your catch gilled and gutted, if you can weigh it before you have gilled and gutted it then that information is very helpful to Fish and Game. The weigh-in stations are Gas Alley, King Street, Temuka and out at Bill and Evelyn Whipp's bach at the Rangitata. We have trophies for different categories in this competition and they are as follows:- Heaviest Fish - Spinwell Trophy Second Heaviest Fish Best Condition Factor - PJ Tackle Shop Trophy Heaviest Fish - Junior Master 60 plus - Gerald Cox Trophy For this competition you need to have your membership up to date so if you are not sure if you are paid up then please give Jackie Manning a call or tx on 0274373237, or phone at night on 03-6155909 or email to jazz12@hotmail.co.nz Good luck for the competition fortnight to you all. Its been a late start to the Rangitata Salmon season with only ones and twos being caught at the river mouth most days. The river mouth was opened earlier in the season in response to a flood warning however this has resulted in not the most ideal fishing conditions with most anglers crowded in a small area. Lets hope the fish are yet to arrive!
The new fishing season has opened and so far no salmon have been caught. It was reported that one had been seen and with Christchurch Show weekend coming up It might be a good week to get the gear out, check it over and get to the starting blocks.
The Holiday home at the Rangitata reserve has been re roofed and a covered patio added. This will improve the house and the new roof will be maintenance free for years to come. Colin, Mort, Phil, Jackie and John, all helped builders Chris deJoux and Karl Taylor do the job over a couple of days. Great Job! Bookings are coming in for the season so please hurry and contact Jackie if you want to book some time out there. Many thanks to Brian Williams for the donation of a new fridge for the house. You will all be aware that there will be an election this year for Central South Island Fish & Game Councillors.
Your vote is important for Salmon fishing in Central South Island and the hatchery. At present there are a number of Councillors that are pro Salmon fishing and have achieved a great deal through them to benefit Salmon in this area. It is important to retain this balance so that the program and Salmon fishing can advance. So when exercising your vote look at Candidates profiles, check out what they have achieved for Salmon in this area and vote wisely. Good Luck A well attended AGM took place on the 6th August at the Fish & Game rooms. The committee was returned for another year along with Paul Brown from Temuka. President's report is as follows, Annual Report to South Canterbury Salmon Anglers Assn AGM. 6th August 2015. The South Canterbury Salmon Anglers Association is a small group with limited finances, quietly doing its bit to promote and enhance the Salmon fishery in the Central South Island. Our involvement with the McKinnon’s Creek salmon hatchery is our major focus in terms of enhancement for the fishery and our property at the Rangitata reserve is our commitment to members. During the year, the committee voted to donate around $500.00 to provide another salmon egg incubator for the hatchery volunteers to use at a remote site on the Rangitata and some investigation is being done as to the best type to use. The members bach at the Rangitata reserve is a major asset for us and needs to be kept in good condition. A couple of weeks at the end of October have been put aside for some maintenance work to be carried out and bookings will not be taken for that period. The roof will be renewed and an aluminum patio built to provide some weather protection. Many thanks to Colin Wilson for getting the framework powder coated at no expense to our association. Last seasons river conditions were not conducive to great salmon fishing and the clear water made fish hard to catch. It looks likely that summer drought conditions will prevail again this year with the prediction of an El Nino weather pattern. Light gear and early morning fishing might be the best way to secure a bag this season. Whatever happens, its great just to be able to get out to our rivers and wander about with the fishing rod. A fish is a bonus and we should consider ourselves lucky to have a successful trip. Some of our members are having trouble getting out as they once used to, and its up to those of us who are still active to offer help to these members so they can enjoy a days fishing once again. Our website is working well however it would be great to have some participation from members with fishing stories and information that could add to its interest by members and non members alike. Again I wish to thank the committee for their work throughout the year and to the Mannings for the work they put in keeping an eye on the Rangitata bach. Phil de Joux. SC Salmon Anglers Assn Chairperson. The club AGM is on Thursday 6th August, 7.30 at Fish & Game rooms Temuka. There will be a raffle, a couple of guest speakers, supper and you can discuss any issues you wish to bring up. We are always looking for new committee members so dont be backward in coming forward.
